Hey, writers! This August has been a whirlwind, I just wanted to send out a Monday missive letting you know regular Monday posts will return in September—I hope you’ve continued enjoying Friday prompts, because I love making them for you! Here’s some of what you can expect this fall:
Writing two specific pieces for coaches, solopreneurs, and creators:
Your bio or “about me.” This isn’t just about writing a good piece that helps your business—investigating your own journey to craft a narrative bio for your site can teach you a lot about what you want and what you’re building, and gain confidence in your niche. You’ll learn how to find the thread or through-line of your story, what to include about your work experience, and how to weave it all together into something that represents your vision and is beautiful to behold!
A philosophy of work. Whether you choose to include some elements of it on your site or not, everyone should know their philosophy of work—if you’re not a coach, solopreneur, or creator, this can also be your philosophy of work for writing. Your philosophy of work includes your approach and articulates the values and ethics your work (and work style) is based on. By crafting a piece of writing to answer sometimes difficult questions, you’ll deepen your understanding of what drives you, and develop a decision-making framework for basically everything you do.
Reading for writers! Some people take it as a given that writers are readers, but it isn’t always so. Many writers or those who want to write struggle with reading and are limited in their writing by a negative relationship with reading. Some of you didn’t grow up reading and don’t know what you like yet, some are intimidated by genres you haven’t explored but bored by the ones you know. Some people lost track of reading during Covid and haven’t gotten back to it, or maybe you used to be a reader before high school and wonder what happened to that child. This is the most important subject to me, so I’m very excited to share my thoughts and practical guides on reading with you—why writers need to read, how to strengthen your reading practice, and how, actually, to read!
Recommended reading on the craft of writing—I’ve got a list of books I love for you, and neutral thoughts on other craft books I’ve read.
Editing!!! Line editing secrets! Developmental tips! How to read your own writing like an editor! I’m also going to share more about my editing process for those of you interested in working as an editor, including some sample pages of my editing we’ll go through to show you what it looks like behind the cursor.
Is there another piece of writing for your business you want me to write about? Questions about reading or editing or writing? Leave a comment or email me at rachel@racheljepsen.com.
