(Whoops! Forgot to schedule this while I was out yesterday… here is your prompt a day late!)
Let ’em laugh while they can
Let ’em spin, let ’em scatter in the wind
I have been to the movies, I’ve seen how it ends
And the joke’s on them
—Brandi Carlile
This is a three-part prompt you might begin to write about abstractly and bring examples into over time, or begin by gathering examples and then attempting to abstract pattern. Writing about humor is very challenging! Try to be free from expectation as you begin these investigations, and whichever way you begin, push yourself to think more about these questions as examples come up in your life, and attempt to form a way of articulating humor (from a first-person basis, ie your opinion / subjectively) over time.
What makes something funny?
What makes you laugh?
Define a “joke.”
(We are only starting here. Later this year, I’ll be writing about using humor in our writing, what use it has wrt relating, and how to play with this dimension of your writing voice. 🤡)
